Acne Care Treatment: Which One Is Best For Your Skin?

by Nathan James

Choosing between the nearly endless acne care products on the market is certainly not an easy task. Determining which product will best be able to clear your skin can be an overwhelming job and the varying products may leave you feeling confused.

You want to make sure that you find the best acne care treatment product for you, and this is going to require you following a couple of important steps.

Figure Out What Skin Type You Have

Figuring out what skin type you have is not a difficult process at all; it just requires that you perform a simple at home skin test. All you need to do is wash off your face and then pat it dry with a towel. After doing so, put a small piece of toilet paper on your t-zone.

Dry skin is indicated if the piece of toilet paper immediately falls off your face. If the paper sticks, though, you have oily skin. When the paper stays in place for a short time before falling off, that tells you that you have normal skin. This important first step will help you determine just which acne care products will be best for you.

Severity of Acne

You also need to know how severe your acne is in order to select the acne care products that will work best for you. Mild acne means a low number of blemishes each month, while severe acne would indicate nearly constant skin problems.

Selecting a Product

The final step is actually going to the store and selecting a product to use. You will need to spend the time necessary to compare products and find one that is designed to work for your severity of acne and skin type.

You probably will not be able to find the product that works best for you the very first time you choose an acne care product. Even if you try a variety of acne care products unsuccessfully, there are other viable options that you can investigate. One possibility is acne surgery. Even when countless products fail, this surgery can eliminate acne problems.

Treat Your Skin Not Your Pimples

A SCENE FROM "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," where Professor Sprout, the herbology professor, asks the students to collect "bubutober pus" during a lesson to give to Madam Pomfrey, the school nurse:

"This'll keep Madam Pomfrey happy," said Professor Sprout, stoppering the last bottle with a cork. "An excellent remedy for the more stubborn forms of acne, bubutober pus. Should stop students resorting to desperate measures to rid themselves of pimples."

"Like poor Eloise Midgen," said Hannah Abbott, a Hufflepuff, in a hushed voice. "She tried to curse hers off."

"Silly girl," said Professor Sprout, shaking her head. "But Madam Pomfrey fixed her nose back in the end."

Admit it—haven't we all tried to pull off an Eloise Midgen and resorted to drastic measures to drive acne away? While we may not have the capabilities to curse pimples off our faces, there's certainly a long list of worse ways to remove acne.

What exactly causes acne? While it is true that stress, cosmetics and detergents (such as harsh shampoos and toothpaste) aggravate acne, they are not the direct sources of your pimples. They will only make worse an already existing condition. And do not blame your diet—chocolate and French fries will not cause acne—or your crush for the huge blemish on your nose. They have nothing to do with it at all.

Hormonal imbalance

The usual culprit behind acne is an imbalance of hormones, which causes the production of extra sebum and therefore, pimples. This could be because of your genes (if your parents were pimply in their childhood, you know who to blame) or other circumstances that could lead to this imbalance—puberty, menopause, pregnancy and monthly periods among them. So if you have a friend who has effortlessly clear skin, curse the genetic lottery and take better care of your skin instead of trying to imitate his/her (lack of) routine.

While others go directly to the source and have hormone treatments in order to lessen their acne, this can be costly and impractical in minor acne cases—sort of like swatting a fly with a nuclear bomb. Some treatments, like birthcontrol pills, have undesirable side effects such as weight gain and headaches. The more dangerous side effects include clots in blood vessels and an increased risk of breast cancer. Males who take birth-control pills suddenly find themselves saddled with a pair of breasts (while some do this intentionally, that's an entirely different story.)

A good skincare regimen will not only prevent more pimples from popping up, but will delay the onset of wrinkles and freckles. Simply washing your face just doesn't do anymore. In our more polluted environment, you will have to learn how to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin at least once a day. Applying sunscreen even when you're not going out in the sun is also important because indoor lights also contain skin-harming rays. So if you're planning to spend extended hours in front of the computer for a term paper, make sure you've slathered on some SPF.

Old staple

If you're really going for a direct treatment of the pimple, you might want to check out an old staple: Benzoyl Peroxide.

However, Benzoyl Peroxide apparently isn't just a spot treatment. According to Dr. Bernadette Arcilla of the Philippine Dermatological Society, when faced with acne, you should treat the entire affected area with Benzoyl Peroxide, but don't overdo it! Too much of it (say, a huge dollop on top of the blemish) will dry out not just the pimple, but the surrounding skin as well, causing more damage. "The best way to apply it is to spread it evenly over the affected area, so that not only will the pimple dry out, but future breakouts will be prevented as well," Dr. Arcilla said.

Before buying a tube of treatment, said Dr. Arcilla, take note of the concentration of Benzoyl Peroxide before applying it—PanOxyl, for example, has three variants: 2.5 percent for mild acne, 5 percent for moderate acne and 10 percent for severe cases. The latter is best left for body acne, such as pimples on your back and chest, while facial acne is adequately treated by the less concentrated variants. Again, overdoing anything will cause more harm than good so always start with a smaller concentration.

Dr. Arcilla also advised patients to use medication daily—not just on a pimple, but on the entire affected area. "You should treat the skin, not the pimples. Pimples are just a symptom of something bigger," Dr. Arcilla said. "And if you treat it early, you can prevent scarring due to more blemishes."

Instead of treating just the surface, go for an acne management program. In the long-term process (which combines a good skincare regimen and acne treatment), pimples won't be gone in a week, but there is a significant 30- to 40-percent reduction of acne in one to two months. The process can be expedited with the help of your dermatologist, who can help you create an acne management program for yourself. This does take a lot more time than quick fix-acne treatments, but the results are permanent, at least.

Now, isn't that better than cursing pimples off your face?

No Wonder We’re Still Popping Pimples

Despite the constant warnings about popping pimples, we continue to do so. I know that it’s hard to resist. When you look in the mirror, and see an ugly whitehead staring you in the face, what are you supposed to do? Smile and say it looks good? You pop the pimple!

The urge to make it go away is so much stronger than just leaving it alone. No one likes to walk around sporting a good-sized zit. Last year a close friend, reaching for my forehead said, “let me pop that pimple for you.”

Of course I shied away and told him to leave it alone. Truth be told, I didn’t even know it was there.

Those who ply their trade via acne are having their cake and eating it too. It’s disgusting the amount of over the counter schemers, and many of the doctors as well, are clamoring to get on board the multi-billion dollar acne industry.

Well over thirty percent of those billions come from the doctor’s office. Your acne may be sending you to the poor house, but it’s certainly making your doctor rich.

I don’t want to venture too far off my topic for this article, but I must ask you this. Whenever you go for a doctor’s visit because of your acne, what’s some of the main questions your doctor asks? What area do the questions focus around?

Does he ask about your love life? No! How about exercise? No! How about your diet? What have you eaten out of the ordinary lately? What are some of the foods you like to eat?

The bulk of the questions center on diet! Your doctor is really giving you a major clue to resolving your acne. Your doctor may be taking your money, but because of the things you’re eating, you’re giving it to him as well.

I’m being sidetracked here. Let’s get back on track.

You must be very careful of the vast array of drugs on the market claiming to be able to fight acne. Some are so dangerous that it may be better to return to popping pimples.

Very recently (Aug.’06) in fact, an article was written in a popular newspaper about the drug ‘isotretinoin.’ It goes by the brand name Accutane.

According to the article, researchers reviewed medical records for 13,772 acne patients in California who had been treated with isotretinoin between 1995 and 2002. The median length of treatment was 21 weeks for the group, whose median age was 19.

In the August issue of the journal, Archives of Dermatology, the researchers wrote this, "The incidence of abnormally high serum lipid levels during isotretinoin treatment may be greater than previously estimated."

When the Accutane treatments were finished, the raised levels of fat were reversible. A statement indicating that fact is duly noted on the Accutane label.

When there is too much fat in the blood long-term problems can result. The risk of having a heart attack or a stoke increases.

Women who choose to take Accutane should be exceedingly careful not to become pregnant. The risk of birth defects is also suspected.

Always consult your doctor before taking anything for your acne. Even if your doctor prescribes medication for you to take, ask questions. How long do you have to be on this medication?

Why this particular medication? Are there any side affects? Can I drive while on this medication? Don’t just glibly accept what your doctor says. Ask questions. Make your doctor think. Work with your doctor on your care. Don’t leave it all up to him.

Eat your way to better skin

Up to 90 per cent of Australians - or 18 million people - will suffer from skin ailments at some time in their lives, including acne, eczema, skin cancer and psoriasis , according to figures from the Australasian College of Dermatologists. Almost one-quarter of children have eczema, compared with about 10 per cent a decade ago and about 85 per cent will have acne.

Although most acne clears after adolescence, up to 20 per cent of adults may continue to be affected.

It is no surprise, then, that the medicated skin care market is experiencing unprecedented growth, but some practitioners believe what we put inside our bodies is more important than smearing our skin with expensive treatments.

Nutritionist and author Patrick Holford says: "Your skin is affected by how well you are internally and is therefore a remarkable barometer of your overall health. Getting your body's systems working optimally is crucial to addressing skin problems. Diet is key - eating foods that nourish your body while limiting those that contribute no nutritional value is important."

Many skin conditions are thought to be a reflection of hormone imbalances and the inability to absorb nutrients and eliminate the byproducts of digestion. Helen Sher, founder of the natural skin care company Sher, says: "The majority of our clients have been on courses of antibiotics to banish spots and rosacea, but this is not a long-term solution." She points out that antibiotics kill good bacteria as well as bad, which can damage the digestive and immune systems.

In the case of rosacea (an inflammatory condition that affects 45 million people worldwide, in which the face becomes flushed and itchy), there is evidence that many sufferers produce insufficient stomach acid and the resultant incomplete digestion of food is the main factor.

If skin disorders are the body's way of expressing its imbalances, then treating a skin problem using topical creams and gels is the equivalent of applying a hot flannel to the tip of an iceberg. Robin Logan, author of The Homoeopathic Treatment Of Eczema, explains why it is important to view the body as a whole: "Suppressing eruptions [topically] can lead to the development of more serious internal complaints. This is typically seen in the eczema/asthma syndrome."

According to Michael Franklin, founder of Britain's Allergy and Nutrition Centre, food allergies play a considerable part in many skin complaints. "Psoriasis is usually extremely difficult to treat, yet if more patients and practitioners knew of the links with bowel toxicity, there would be fewer problems. Liver detoxification is an important part of treatment. With rosacea, a lack of B vitamins may play a role."

Not everyone subscribes to the idea of treating your biggest organ from the inside out. Nina Goad, of the British Association of Dermatologists, says: "In general, diet has little influence on skin, though there are a few exceptions. Alcohol and spicy foods seem to make rosacea worse.

"As for acne, there is some evidence that foods with a high glycaemic index [which measures the effects of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels] may worsen the condition in some people."

What foods to avoid

Dr Jonathan Wilkin, of Britain's National Rosacea Society, says foods that might trigger flare-ups include liver, yoghurt, cheese (except cottage cheese), chocolate, vanilla, vinegar, spicy foods, coffee or tea.

The most documented reactive foods for eczema sufferers are milk, eggs, peanuts, soybeans, wheat, seafood and seeded fruits. Nutritionist Patrick Holford suggests that with skin complaints you should limit your intake of sugary foods, refined carbohydrates (such as white bread) and anything fried.

What foods to eat

The skin is the last place nutrients will arrive after they have serviced the rest of your body so it is vital to get enough of the things we know help the skin to heal and regenerate.

Proper hydration is vital to a healthy system. Helen Sher recommends drinking six or seven glasses of water daily. Vitamins C and E are important for skin health - mainly as antioxidants - so include organic fruits and vegetables in your diet, especially black grapes and blueberries. Apricots, oranges, peppers, carrots, strawberries and broccoli are rich in the carotenoid pigments, which your body converts to vitamin A.

Nutritionist and author Michael van Straten says: "Carrot juice is bursting with beta carotene; one glass a day, fresh if possible, works wonders for the skin and is a powerful antioxidant."

The naturopathic nutritionist Charlotte Fraser suggests increasing your intake of essential fatty acids to help treat dry skin conditions and acne. Eczema and psoriasis sufferers will benefit from the anti-inflammatory effect of omega 3 found in oily fish.

Evening primrose oil is a source of gamma linoleic acid, which promotes healthy skin, hair and nails.

The most important B vitamin for the skin is biotin, which is found in bananas, eggs and rice. Zinc deficiency can be a factor in psoriasis and acne. Good sources of zinc are sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
